New Delhi: As the conflict in West Asia shows signs of making up, United Heavy Industry Minister HD Kumaraswamy said that the state-run Bharat Heavy Electrical Co., Ltd. (BHEL) is keen to work in the region once the situation returns to normal. The minister added that BHEL is closely monitoring the crisis in the region, including changes in the Syrian regime and an Israel-Hamas ceasefire.

Although the minister did not specify the type of opportunity that BHEL will seek, the development is very important because it shows that India is ready for a competitive reconstruction effort in the war-torn areas of West Asia.
Waiting for the designation of “Strategic PSU”
BHEL’s main tasks include manufacturing engineering and power generation equipment. For its work in the power and defense sectors and its international footprint, the Parliamentary Public Commitment Committee recommends designating BHEL as the “Strategic PSU” for December. In May 2024, BHEL announced a partnership with Hima Mideal East Fze for its railway signaling business. “Recognizing its core strength as a manufacturing company, BHEL has made efforts to focus its products at the heart of its international business. BHEL’s products, such as motors, Transformers, compressors and valves, have demand in the international market, and orders in the sector have grown over the years.”
Hibernation project
This is not the first attempt by BHEL to conduct a project in West Asia after the conflict. The company’s Malibu gas turbine project in Yemen has been put on hold due to a civil war since March 2015. The December 2024 Parliamentary Committee report also recommended that BHEL work closely with the Ministry of External Affairs to assess the feasibility of recovery projects in unstable areas.
In its December 2024 report, the committee said that focusing on exports from new foreign customers could reduce BHEL’s dependence on its domestic customers. The company said in its annual report for fiscal 24 that BHEL’s turnover currently has export share of slightly more than 3%.
