The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) on Saturday held a meeting with airline chief executive officers (CEOs) after receiving 70 bomb threats against flights operated by Air India in just six days.

At a meeting held at the Civil Aviation Ministry office at Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan, BCAS officials directed the executive director to follow the standard operating procedure (SOP) for handling bomb threats. They stressed the need to keep all stakeholders informed about the threats and the countermeasures being taken, IANS reported.

BCAS and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will issue new guidelines for airlines on how to deal with bomb threats, the agency reported.

According to reports, more than 30 bomb threats were received on flights operated by multiple airlines on Saturday.

Sources said investigations revealed that some of the IP addresses associated with these threats originate from places such as London, Germany, Canada and the United States. However, officials have not ruled out the possibility that those responsible may have used a VPN (virtual private network) to hide their actual location.

On Saturday, Vistara announced that five of its international flights had received security threats from social media. Likewise, around four IndiGo flights faced safety-related alerts. Other affected airlines include Air India, Air India Express, Alkasa Air, SpiceJet, Star Airlines and Alliance Air.
