Bengaluru: On Monday, the Karnataka Congress passed the opposition BJP protest, passing a larger Bangalore Governance Bill. The bill involves the restructuring of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which divides it into seven city companies in the Greater Bangalore region. It also stipulates the coordination and supervision of the larger Bangalore Constitution and provides 30 months of term for mayor and deputy mayor.
The bill was introduced in Parliament by DK Shivakumar, deputy chief minister who holds the Bangalore development portfolio. “We want power and administration to be decentralized. We are not destroying Bangalore as some opposition members say. Instead, we are strengthening it. We want to make Bangalore stronger.” He added that the bill has been brought to Bangalore in a new direction.
Opposition leader R Ashoka disagreed with his statement, saying the bill was an insult to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who wanted to strengthen the local corpse. He claimed Congress is paving the way for other local agencies to propose similar needs to divide them into several departments. “Split Bengaluru will not help us,” Ahsoka said.
In attending the discussion, Yelahanka BJP MLA SR Vishwanath said: “Why split when the chief commissioner has been running BBMP without elected institutions for the past years? He also said that if the government is keen to form a larger Bengaluru it should be done after demarcation of Lok Sabha and parliamentary constituencies. Vishwanath said: “We will support you to strengthen the administration of the government, but don’t split Bengaluru.” ”
