The Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus became synonymous with the suffering of the Syrian people during the Syrian civil war that began in 2011.
It is the de facto capital of Palestinian refugees in the Middle East and is home to approximately 150,000 people. But it was destroyed in the conflict, enduring a siege and brutal fighting between rebel fighters and government forces before being captured by the Islamic State group.
Now, after the fall of Assad’s regime, people are starting to return home, including BBC Arabic’s Feras Killani, who grew up there with his family before leaving in 2013.
