India batsman Shreyas Iyer poses for Mumbai on day two of their 2024-25 Ranji Trophy fourth round match against Odisha at Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC in Mumbai The team scored an extraordinary double hundred goals, demonstrating his extraordinary talent. The right-handed batsman had a brilliant innings, scoring 233 runs off 228 balls, including 24 fours and 9 sixes, to achieve his highest first-class score.
Iyer, who started the day with 152 not out, had scored his 15th first-class hundred on day one. He continued his impressive form, reaching his double century in just 201 balls, surpassing his previous best of 202.
The 29-year-old came to Mumbai on 154/3 after Odisha captain Govinda Poddar asked to bat first. Iyer teamed up with Siddesh Lad to build a mammoth 354-run stand for the fourth wicket to guide Mumbai past the 500-run mark. The lad also reached his ninth first-class century, showcasing Mumbai’s strong batting performance against the Odisha bowling attack.
This was Iyer’s second consecutive hundred in this tournament after his brilliant 142 in the previous match against Maharashtra. This is his first first-class century in almost three years, with his last century coming on his Test debut against New Zealand in Kanpur in 2021.
After his impressive performance against Maharashtra, Iyer took a break in the next game against Tripura and returned against Odisha, scoring His highest grade. Despite a slow start to the domestic season, with him scoring just 154 runs in six innings in the Duleep Trophy, which included two half-centuries and two ducks, Iyer has now proved his class with this brilliant innings.
During the Iran Cup while representing Mumbai, Iyer’s performance was disappointing as he scored only 57 and 8 runs in two innings. Moreover, he suffered another setback when he recorded a duck in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy opener against Baroda last week. This year has not been the best for the Mumbai batsman as he was dropped from the India Test squad and lost his BCCI central contract earlier this year.
However, Iyer’s recent two centuries will undoubtedly boost his confidence as he strives to regain his place in the Indian Test squad.
