Two women pilgrims who were walking to Tirumala from Punganur were hit by a 108 ambulance at Narasingapuram village in Chandragiri mandal in Tirupati district. Two people died on the spot and three others were injured in the accident.
The accident occurred on the Tirupati-Ananathapuram National Highway in the early hours of Monday. The ambulance was carrying a patient from Madanapalai to Tirupati when it hit two pilgrims walking on the roadside.
The deceased were identified as Pedda Reddemma, 40, and Lakshmamma, 50, from Chempalapalli in Ramasamudram mandal of Annamayya district.
When the disaster struck, the pilgrims had almost reached Srivarimettu in the foothills of Tirumala, from where they would follow the trail to the temple.
The three injured were shifted to SVR Ruia Government General Hospital (SVRRGGH) in Tirupati for treatment.
