Shiromani Akali dal (Sad) work president Balwinder Singh Bhundar condemned the remarks and videos of certain leaders who challenged the party’s decisions, as well as the decisions of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). He warned that “discipline will not be tolerated” after anti-party rhetoric.
The issue was discussed at a Parliamentary Committee meeting in Chandigarh on Sunday. Senior leaders Gulzar Singh Ranike, Janmeja Singh Sekhon, Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal, Heera Singh Gabhria and Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema were present.
“Members can express their views in party forums, but no one is above party discipline,” Bhundar said. He further warned that any violations would be dealt with strictly.
He announced that all anti-party statements and videos had been referred to the Discipline Committee. “Notice of the reason for the performance will be issued and action will be taken based on the responses received.”
Bikram Singh Majithia and six other SAD leaders opposed the SGPC’s decision to remove Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh on Saturday, causing tensions within the party.
Majithia and the leaders issued a joint statement saying: “We reaffirm our respect for Sri Akal Takht Sahib and his Jathedar. Its dignity is higher than that of individuals and must be maintained.” They warned that internal conflicts weakened solidarity and strengthened the power of opposition.
They acknowledged that in the past, they neglected to solve key pan-intelligence problems and required introspection. “SAD members must unite, put aside personal differences and restore the integrity of the party to protect regional and pan-metal interests of Punjab,” the statement said.
Majithia’s concerns are seen as backstab Sukhbir Singh Badal. Bhundar urged leaders to maintain party etiquette and avoid making statements in public and in the media.
In the controversy over the Jasedars, Nihang Singh Jathebandis, led by Baba Balbir Singh 96 Crori, announced a plan to protest the appointment of Sri Anandpur Sahib of the new Jathedars.
“Nihang Jathebandis carries horses and traditional weapons, aiming to oppose their perceived intervention in Sikh religious leadership.” Tensions within the Sikh community are expected to rise with the leadership transition.
With Sukhbir Badal losing support at the Punjab Congress, retaining control over SGPC has become a challenge. His dispute with Magitia could further influence SGPC decision-making. Resentment in SAD becomes increasingly important after removing Jathedar from Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
Former SGPC chief Gobind Singh criticized the decision and questioned the function of the body.
