Jio Cinema merges with Disney+ Hotstar

The newly merged Disney-Reliance India business will broadcast all sports events, including the popular Indian Premier League (IPL), exclusively on Disney’s Hotstar app, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Earlier this year, Disney and Reliance agreed to combine their media assets in a deal worth $8.5 billion to form India’s largest entertainment company. The merger brings together a total of 120 TV channels and two streaming platforms, but no details were provided on how the integration would be carried out. This latest decision signals the combined entity’s strategy for its sports streaming service, although it’s unclear how other content will be handled across platforms.

Disney declined to comment and Reliance did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The choice to stream sports events on Hotstar was influenced by its superior live content technology and ability to deliver targeted advertising. Hotstar is best known for live cricket broadcasts in India, with a record 59 million simultaneous viewers during last year’s Men’s Cricket World Cup final.

Reliance’s JioCinema platform currently has the streaming rights for IPL cricket, Winter Olympics and the Indian Premier League, while Hotstar has the rights for the International Cricket Council Championships, the English Premier League and the Professional Kabaddi League. The companies aim to complete the transition by January.

The merger was approved by India’s competition regulator in August after the two companies made concessions to ensure fair cricket broadcasting practices, including a pledge not to excessively increase advertising rates.
