According to MacRumors, Apple will launch updated 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models in 2025, which will use the company’s new M4 chip.
According to the report, the update is expected to bring significant performance improvements and a series of enhancements to its lightweight laptop.
M4 chips already power the latest MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac mini models, with 10-core CPUs and 10-core GPUs. Benchmark test results show multi-core CPU performance increased by 25% over its predecessor, the M3 chip. Additionally, the M4’s improved power efficiency is expected to extend battery life, a signature feature of the MacBook Air series.
Following Apple’s recent decision to double the minimum RAM from 8GB, the base configuration of the 2025 model may come with 16GB of RAM. However, no major design changes are expected, with the last redesign being launched in 2022.
One notable upgrade may be a 12MP camera with support for Apple Center Stage technology, a feature previously reserved for select iPads and Macs with Studio Display. Center Stage uses machine learning to keep users centered during video calls, even when they are moving, making it ideal for FaceTime and Zoom. The publication adds that the camera may also include a desktop view, which provides an overhead view of the user’s workspace.
Connectivity options are also expected to be improved. New models may feature three Thunderbolt 4 ports (currently two Thunderbolt 3 ports) and support up to two external monitors.
While some MacBook Pro models come with a nano-texture display option that reduces glare and enhances viewing, it’s still uncertain whether the feature will extend to the MacBook Air.
The release schedule suggests announcements will be made via press releases on the Apple Newsroom website between January and March. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this may precede other spring launches, including the new iPhone SE, which is expected to be released at Apple’s traditional March or April event.
