A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal in Siliguri, Patna and part of Tibet

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit Nepal in the early hours of Friday, shaking its homeland and waking residents. The National Center for Earthquake Monitoring and Research confirmed that the epicenter was in Bhairavkunda, in the Sindhupalchowk district, about 65 kilometers east of Kathmandu. The earthquake hit 2:51 a.m. local time, causing panic in central and eastern Nepal.

Earthquake in Siliguri, Patna

The tremor is not limited to Nepal. Residents in the border areas of India and Tibet were also shocked. Although no immediate casualties or major structural damage have been reported, local authorities continue to assess the situation. In parts of India, including Siliguri and Patna’s tremors.

Witness Account

Ganesh Nepali, a senior official at Sindhupalchowk, described the frightening moment: “It strongly shocked us from our sleep. We rushed out of the home. People are now back home. So far, we have not received any reports of damage or injury.”

Earthquake risks in Nepal

Nepal is located in one of the most active seismic regions in the world (categorized as seismic regions IV and V) poses an ongoing threat to earthquakes. The 2015 earthquake was 7.8, killing more than 9,000 people and causing more than one million buildings to be damaged or destroyed. Given this history, even mild earthquakes have raised concerns about potential aftershocks and long-term damage.

Official warnings and responses

Authorities have advised residents to be alert to possible aftershocks, as secondary shocks are common after major earthquake events. The disaster response team in Nepal is closely monitoring the situation and further updates are expected as the assessment continues.

The German Center for Earth Science Research has a slightly lower quake amplitude of 5.6 and a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), highlighting the potential changes in seismic readings. Regardless of the exact size, this event quickly reminds Nepal of the importance of fragility and readiness to earthquakes.
