Yahya Sinwar was the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that killed more than 1,200 people and led to a year-long Israeli operation in Gaza that killed more than 40,000 People died, including children.

Israel has vowed to uproot Hamas from Gaza and has so far eliminated much of its top leadership, including former leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in July.

Following Sinwar’s death, Israel now hopes the hostages still trapped in Gaza will return. Sinwar’s deputy, Khalil Haya, seen as a potential successor, made defiant remarks, saying the hostages would not be returned until Israeli forces withdraw from Gaza and the war ends.
