Ugandan woman sentenced to 13 years RI for smuggling drugs into Hyderabad

A Ugandan woman who was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for smuggling 3,900 grams of heroin worth Rs 25.35 million into Hyderabad was on Friday sentenced to 13 years of rigorous imprisonment. The Rangareddy district court in LB Nagar also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the convicts, default of which will result in another three months’ imprisonment.

The verdict comes three years after the woman was arrested on June 5, 2021, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. Picking up her missed checked baggage at the airport.

A case was registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 and the accused was convicted during trial.
