The Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission has proposed that men should not tailor or cut women’s hair to protect them from “undesirable contact” and avoid “malice” from male workers in these industries.
Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission chairperson Babita Chauhan also said gyms that cater to female customers must hire female trainers. She also recommended that police conduct mandatory checks on all gym instructors. “If a woman wishes to train with a male coach, she needs to provide written consent,” Chauhan said.
The recommendations were made by the women’s agency at a meeting held on October 28.
Tailor shops must ensure there is a seamstress available to take measurements, and school buses transporting girls must have a female staff member, she stressed. She also suggested installing CCTV cameras at coaching centres. The committee has sent its recommendations to all regions.
Himani Agarwal, a member of the women’s group, told PTI that the committee will then ask the state government to formulate a law in this regard.
