Proposed safety measures for public and commercial venues
In its latest guidelines to improve women’s safety, the Women’s Commission recommended a comprehensive approach in the public and business sectors, including appointing female security guards on school buses and ensuring only female staff handle women-specific clothing in shops. The guidelines were discussed at a meeting held in Lucknow on October 28, where committee members brainstormed ways to enhance women’s safety.
Feasibility is under review
Committee member Maneesha Ahlawat told TOI that discussions are still at a preliminary stage. “The feasibility of these proposals has not yet been determined,” she said. Once finalized, the recommendations will be submitted to the government to draft policies for effective implementation at the grassroots level.
Districts have begun initial implementation
In Shamli district, probation officer Hamid Hussain has already started implementing the guidelines. Hussain said businesses are now required to employ female trainers or teachers in women-only gyms, drama centers and yoga studios, as well as install CCTV systems with DVR capabilities for added security.
Hussein pointed to additional safety directives, including ensuring school buses have female security or teachers present. “Boutiques and clothing stores catering to women must employ seamstresses for taking measurements and have active CCTV surveillance,” he said. Besides, coaching centers must be equipped with CCTV surveillance along with proper toilet facilities and shops selling women’s wear should employ Female staff come to assist customers.
Public reaction to initiative
Praising the initiative, a social worker from Shamli Veena Agrawal said, “We welcome this effort of the Women’s Commission. These measures are aimed at enhancing safety and ensuring a supportive environment for women at various public and commercial places across the state.
