Prince William said the past year has been “brutal” as his wife and father announced a cancer diagnosis.

“It’s been horrible. It’s probably been the hardest year of my life,” William told NBC News’ international partner Sky after a week-long tour for the fourth annual Earth Challenge Awards in Cape Town, South Africa. news.

King Charles III announced his cancer diagnosis in February after undergoing surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Buckingham Palace said at the time that “an isolated issue was noted” during the surgery and further tests confirmed the presence of cancer.

After progress in treatment, he resumed his official duties as king in April.

In a video address released in March, Kate, Princess of Wales, said she had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing “a series of preventive chemotherapy” after a period of widespread speculation about her health and whereabouts. . She said the cancer was discovered during major abdominal surgery in January.

In September, Kate said she had completed chemotherapy and would resume light public activities by the end of the year.

Neither Charles nor Kate have revealed what type of cancer they have been diagnosed with. Buckingham Palace said the king does not have prostate cancer.

Kate has largely receded from public view in the months since her diagnosis was announced, but the state events and other ceremonies that royals typically attend have not stopped.

William, Prince of Wales, told Sky: “It’s been really difficult trying to overcome everything and get everything on track.”

He said he was “proud of his wife and I’m proud of my dad” despite how difficult it was, Sky reported, adding that Kate was “fantastic” and “doing a great job.”

Sky noted that the prince seemed more relaxed than usual when receiving the Earth Shooting Award.

“It’s funny you say that because I can’t relax any more this year,” he told Sky. “So, you all see that, and it’s fun. But it’s more about keeping going, you’ve got to keep going… I love my job, I love pacing myself and making sure I’m getting the job done. “Also have time to spend with my family. ”
