Since April last year, more than 9,200 people in and around Salem, Pudukkottai and Vriddhachalam in Tamil Nadu have officially changed or changed their names, bringing in revenue of Rs 54.41 lakh to the state government.
Of the total 9,255 people who changed their names, majority (8,258) changed or changed their names in English, while as many as 997 people changed their names in Tamil.
Salem Government Department Press received 7,288 of the 9,255 applications received between April 2023 and September 30 of this year.
It is noteworthy that the revenue of Rs 54.41 lakh came only from the government branch publishing houses located in Salem, Pudukkottai and Vriddhachalam, which started accepting applications for name change or change since April this year.
In addition to the government branch presses at these three locations, applications for name change or change are also accepted at the Stationery and Printing Board headquarters in Chennai and the government branch presses in Madurai and Tiruchi.
In 2023-2024, various governments in Tamil Nadu generated revenue of Rs 157 crore for announcing name changes or changes.
The fee for publishing a name change notification in English is Rs 750 and the fee for publishing the change notification in Tamil is Rs 150. Notifications of transgender people’s name changes are published free of charge in the Government Gazette.
People often change their names or corrections for a variety of reasons: changing their initials or changing their marital status, etc.
