Climate change needs to be controlled to prevent large-scale rural migration: Narayana Murthy Pune News

Murthy mentioned projections that suggest India will face dire consequences if it fails to control climate change. “What is likely to happen is that there will be a massive migration of people from rural areas of states… to more habitable places like Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad,” he said.

Murthy stressed the need for collaboration between politicians, bureaucrats and business leaders to prevent this from happening, while also citing innovations in battery technology and Infosys’ leadership in sustainability. He said that despite India’s historically slow initial response to challenges, he was optimistic that the country would achieve the 2030 target.

The event also recognized the contributions of veteran environmentalist Madhav Gadgil and young entrepreneur Alok Kale. Attendees included eminent personalities such as renowned scientist Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, Maratha Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MCCIA) Electronics Cluster Foundation Chairman Pradeep Bhargava and veteran industrialist Jamshyd Godrej.

In a conversation with Ganesh Natarajan, founder of 5F World, Murthy talked about the challenges posed by climate change. He stressed that parts of India and Africa could be severely affected by rising temperatures.

Explaining the specific cities he mentioned, Murthy added, “These cities have become extremely challenging to live in, with difficult transportation and rising pollution levels. They are becoming uninhabitable. Therefore, the industrial sector and policies Framers must take steps to mitigate the effects of climate change and prevent future mass migration,” he said.

Murthy also stressed that today’s youth need to sacrifice their luxurious lives. He said: “The younger generation must fight with a sense of responsibility to the country and society. We must care for the vulnerable groups in society, otherwise we will not even have animals. To become a responsible citizen and work for the progress of the country is True nationalism. Just wrapping oneself in a flag does not make one a true nationalist,” he said.
