The Supreme Court on Wednesday (November 6, 2024) came down heavily on the “heavy-handed” approach of the Uttar Pradesh authorities, directing a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to a man whose house was razed to the ground for road widening in 2019.
A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra further asked the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary to conduct an inquiry into the illegal demolitions in Maharajganj district.
“You can’t demolish a house overnight with a bulldozer,” said the bench, which was hearing about the demolition, which took place in 2019 for road widening works.
