Alpha Genesis uses monkeys for research trials and is one of the largest and most comprehensive nonhuman primate facilities in the United States.
The facility houses more than 6,000 monkeys. The Sheriff’s Department has not confirmed what kind of monkeys escaped the lab, but Alpha Genesis’ website says it targets capuchins and macaques.
It’s unclear whether the monkeys were involved in ongoing clinical trials or what kind of testing they underwent before escaping. Alpha Genesis housed 3,500 monkeys on Morgan Island, South Carolina, which became known as Monkey Island.
This isn’t the first time monkeys have escaped to Beaufort County, South Carolina. There have been several other escapes, including one in 2016 when 19 monkeys escaped for six hours.
